It all looks so quick and innocent. And a great lady is gone...

Damn. I can't stop crying today.

I can't actually read anything out of that other than the range of times involved. It doesn't even identify the road anywhere I can see. I guess the early appearance of "req the coroner" says she was dead when the CHP arrived on the scene, so I can read *one* thing.

Are the cops doing their business in SMS messages in leet speak these days?

It's at the very top - WestBound I-580, Just West Of N. Livermore Ave.

(Don't worry; I was actually impressed by how much of this I understood. I guess five years of dating an EMT paid off in some bizarre way.)

Ah, I did skip over the header I guess.

Oh, "580" also appears later, but I didn't trigger on that as a road. The heading actually says "I580", which I recognized as a road. (Can you tell it's not my area there?)

Oh, "YEL DUMP TK HIT MC RIDER" makes more sense this time. Ouch. I'm guess she wasn't driving the dump truck? And as I get more bits, I can go back and figure out earlier and later bits. Third line translates as "motorcycle down". Ouch, ouch, ouch. And I'm starting to figure JxO to be Just Of, and POI must be point of impact.

Seems to me I overlapped her in some fannish place, probably Minneapa, rather briefly, a couple of decades ago, or was in some other way loosely linked.

Thanks. I never had to read these while I was at KFJC in the early 90's, but being friends with fire fighters (Lamont Jones/Kurt Seigel) as well as working FLARE a couple of years, taught me some of my 10-codes. The rest was a result of being an info-geek Admin Assistant supporting people who lived far enough from work that an accident like this would cause them to get a hotel for the night.

Thank you for translating. It makes much more sense the way you say it.

I've tried to make it a point *not* to grieve too much about the deaths of people I don't know, because there are so many of them. But in this case, that's considerably harder than usual. You see, I feel the pain of so many of her and my mutual friends -- and she was a filker, which means there was a solid chance that at some point we would have sat in the same circle and traded songs, which isn't even remotely trivial to me. Hugs and warmth to all concerned. (I don't know the geography lesson implicit in the details of how and when the accident happened, and it's just as well.)

Crap. I was on the CHP Web site last night looking at that (happened across it while looking into the double medivac I heard about on the radio from Pacheco yesterday), not knowing who it was, and thought to myself "Poor damn biker."

Motorcycles are inherently dangerous. (Well, technically, cages are dangerous to bikers . . . ) That's why I sold mine.

4 minutes from fire on scene to the request for coroner means that the medics called it on scene with either a brief contact with medical direction, or no contact. Under California EMS criteria, that's one of "injuries incompatible with life," decapitation, or vital organ separation . . . the other two, incineration and rigor mortis do not apply in this case.

FYI, 10-97 is unit on scene. 10-39 is telephone call / unit dispatched, based on context. So "10-39 SO" means that CHP Dispatch called the county sheriff's office (SO). "10-97 SO" means sheriff's deputy on scene. A lot of the specific unit identifiers vary by area, acronyms for each agency when appropriate.

Again, crap.

Apparently it was pretty major news. My boss at Traffic.com scolded everyone who produces today because there were only four news items reported from the traffic log so far this month.

I was surprised, as I'd reported two of them.

Yes, it was major. It made the third item from the top on SFGate this morning.

Crash Kills Motorcyclist
In Livermore, a female rider collided with a dump truck and fell under its tires. Chronicle 9:55 AM

I read about it just after reading the BayCon Exec list bounce messages.

Thanks for letting me know about this; I've put the sad news up over in [livejournal.com profile] motorcycles, along with [livejournal.com profile] johno's request that no one contact the family.

This morning when I rolled into work, a coworker expressed her relief that I was alive, because a motorcyclist "was killed last night" about my age and description.

Only much later today (Wednesday) did I find out who it was.

At the time she was killed I was riding northbound on 880 on my 23-year-old Honda Nighthawk 550, acutely aware of the dangers, and being as careful as I can. As I am sure she was.

Our paths crossed off and on over the years. More acquaintance than friend, I will nevertheless miss her personally. With her passing, several communities have lost a cherished part of their collective souls.

Man. I'm trying to remember whether I'd ever met her; certainly I remembered her name but I'm not sure in what context. It's such a shame.

She hung out a bit with the KW crowd. If you were at Mike and Anneli Meyer's or Kayvan and Tigger's weddings, she was the one who officiated.
