Laugh-bringing line OTD
Nov. 19th, 2004 11:30 pmSaid by a co-worker this afternoon:
"So, who's going to rush out and catch the SpongeBob SquarePants movie this weekend? Come on, I don't see any hands!"
I actually tried watching SpongeBob SquarePants. I figured I'd give it ten minutes. After two minutes, all I could think was, "Do I have to sit through the other eight minutes?"

Date: 2004-11-20 10:24 am (UTC)(Yes, I've tried watching the TV programme. I might have lasted a couple of minutes, and the TV was saved because I had the cable remote in my hand and not something heavy...)

Anybody with a four-year-old son.
Adam liked it, although not as much as "The Incredibles". I liked most of it. Coming up soon: "Polar Express", which I expect to be only mediocre.

Date: 2004-11-20 11:00 pm (UTC)Actually, it was a he who made the remark. The poor guy has a six-year-old and a 14-month-old and was expecting to get shanghaied into going to see it.

Date: 2004-11-21 03:25 am (UTC)Although I think The Girl is too young to appreciate Spongebob.
I loved the interview on Fresh Air earlier this week with the actor who does the voice of Spongebob. He said things like Brian Wilson and John Sebastian were in touch with his inner Spongebob, as they tend to sing and write happy songs. He even began singing Styx's song "Babe" in his Spongebob voice.

Probly too late for comments... but...
Date: 2004-12-03 04:36 am (UTC)Spongebob is perky, true, but it is quietly subversive in a lot of ways. There are obvious shout-outs to queeritude (which has made SB-SP a gay icon) but also multiple forays into the surreal and Ren-and-Stimpy-like childish perversion. That's all wrapped up in a goofy appeal by people who clearly are enjoying the work they're doing, and to see something like that succeed in the mainstream gives me some hope for the chillun.
To your point, Lynn-- you probably gaped a phoned-in episode-- have an adult fan point you to a couple of episodes that are nicely bizarre.
