From the Friday, February 13th edition of the San Jose Mercury News:

State officials responsible for recording nuptials said Friday [February 13th] that they will accept only standard license forms, which use "an unmarried man" and "an unmarried woman."

If a form is altered or not completed correctly, "It would be returned to the county," said Terri Delgadillo, a deputy health secretary. "We would not record it at the state level."

I wish the story were going on in San Jose instead so I could cover it more. It's IMHO one of the hottest stories worldwide...so close to my back yard, yet in the "S-word" city. Feh.

So now the Mayor of SF is sueing the state's "Marriage is between a Man and a Woman" crap - which *I* sure as hell didn't vote for. ^^

(Just because something was supported by some "majority of voters somewhere" does not make it right or ethical - many people wanted to keep the vote from blacks and women, and prevent "different races" from marrying.... but part of the job of laws is to PROTECT MINORITIES from being stomped on by the "majority".)

Go Gavin Newsom!! XD

Marriage Licenses

I went to a lesbian wedding reception and met two couples and a woman whose partner was home with a cold. Part of it was the romance and excitement of it all and part of it was civil disobedience. The anecdotes I heard about the line waiting outside San Francisco City Hall was of gleeful celebration (many had parents, children and grandparents along) as well as iron-jawed determination. Even if the licenses are voided, the statement has been made that even municipalities agree that people who love each other need not be burdened with silly formalities like gender.

Of course, my own belief is that the government should get out of the marriage business, but then, that's me.

Equally fun to watch has been the interplay between the governor "ordering" Lockyer to put a halt to it and Lockyer going, "Uh, excuse me, but you don't have the authority to "order" me to do anything."

Lockyer has come out saying he's against the state law that makes marriage "one man, one woman," but would uphold the law as it exists. IMHO Arnold's "order" gave Lockyer the excuse he'd wanted to drag his heels. Hee. I want the popcorn concession.
