While we were doing Aqua Aerobics I noticed the tape the instructor was playing had older songs than I'm used to hearing in class. It had lots of Roy Orbison, the Beatles, Blondie, the Bee Gees, Herman's Hermits, Blondie, and the Go-Gos.

Then it hit me: This is what they're going to be playing at us when we're senior citizens in old fogey homes. Eeep.

what's so scary about that? every generation has its music, and much (most?) of it sounds very silly to the generations before and after.

When today's 14 year olds retire in 50-60 years they'll be playing Britney Spears and N'Sync.

The much-vaunted 1960s, which many regard as a high water mark in popular music, saw an unconscionable amount of throwaway garbage hit the airwaves. Grab a copy of Billboard's top 40 from a random week in, say, 1968. Bet you'll never have heard of three-fourths of the songs in it.

Betcha you're wrong on that one.

I used to listen to AM radio fervently back in 1968, and I've worked at an oldies station.
