Laugh-bringing line OTD

Said by a co-worker this afternoon:

"So, who's going to rush out and catch the SpongeBob SquarePants movie this weekend? Come on, I don't see any hands!"

I actually tried watching SpongeBob SquarePants. I figured I'd give it ten minutes. After two minutes, all I could think was, "Do I have to sit through the other eight minutes?"

I've tried TWICE! Woo.

Maybe someone can explain to us the appeal.

I think your co-worker needs to be put down. The infection has obviously reached her brain.

[livejournal.com profile] rollick wrote a review of that movie (she reviews movies and does other writery things for a living) that not only positively guarantees I will never see that movie, it also kind of made me wish I hadn't read the review. My eyes! My brain! Augh!

Actually, it was a he who made the remark. The poor guy has a six-year-old and a 14-month-old and was expecting to get shanghaied into going to see it.

There's a movie? I'm glad I don't get to the cinema much, I'll have no trouble missing that one...

(Yes, I've tried watching the TV programme. I might have lasted a couple of minutes, and the TV was saved because I had the cable remote in my hand and not something heavy...)

FWIW, all the reviews have been surprisingly positive.

Even the one on All Things Considered.

Anybody with a four-year-old son.

Adam liked it, although not as much as "The Incredibles". I liked most of it. Coming up soon: "Polar Express", which I expect to be only mediocre.

Sponge Bob ROCKS!

Of course, I want to see "National Treasure" first, being a conspiracy geek and all.

I've seen it. Spongebob is relentlessly cheerful. Not so much as that Evil Purple Thing, though.

Although I think The Girl is too young to appreciate Spongebob.

I loved the interview on Fresh Air earlier this week with the actor who does the voice of Spongebob. He said things like Brian Wilson and John Sebastian were in touch with his inner Spongebob, as they tend to sing and write happy songs. He even began singing Styx's song "Babe" in his Spongebob voice.

The only reason I have seen more than a few nanoseconds od SBSP is it stole the time slot where Nikelodeon used to show Invader Zim, which IMHO was the best thing on children's TV since Rocket J. Squirril.

SBSP, on the other hand, struck me immediately as an even more effective trigger of the adult gag relex than Barney.

Probly too late for comments... but...

Invader Zim RULEZ. However, it got kicked off the air because it was too nakedly subversive-- hey, when the creator is also the author of "Johnny the Homocidal Manic" you have to wonder how Nickelodeon allowed such a thing to take place with its money.

Spongebob is perky, true, but it is quietly subversive in a lot of ways. There are obvious shout-outs to queeritude (which has made SB-SP a gay icon) but also multiple forays into the surreal and Ren-and-Stimpy-like childish perversion. That's all wrapped up in a goofy appeal by people who clearly are enjoying the work they're doing, and to see something like that succeed in the mainstream gives me some hope for the chillun.

To your point, Lynn-- you probably gaped a phoned-in episode-- have an adult fan point you to a couple of episodes that are nicely bizarre.
