I voted, and pasted the link in an IRC channel for fans of yaoi (gay-themed anime), where I was chatting at the time. The approx. 70% saying "yes" is a bit scary, but the USA Today demographic is hopefully a bit skewed.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought there was supposed to be a separation of church and state in the US. Wasn't religious persecution the reason many people came over in the 1700's? I'm so confused. Then I heard Bush say Marriage is our most sacred institution and a bunch of other stuff, I think marriage is important, but I don't see a lot of evidence in Canada or America that it is a sacred institution. But that's another soap box I should avoid. At least it wasn't Clinton saying it, that would have been really funny.
What's to keep people from "voting" 200,000 times in this poll?
Also, if any "law" or "constitutional ammendment" is to be passed, it should be at the STATE level, not the federal level. When the officiating person at a marriage ceremony makes the "marriage statement" they say "By the powers granted me in the STATE OF (whatever), I pronounce you married". they don't say granted me in the "country of USA" they specifically say "state" or "Commonwealth".
It's not a federal issue. I would think that all 50 states should be in an uproar about the feds trying to whittle away at state responsibilties.
Whether or not I agree or disagree wtih the heterosexual view of marriage, I think a more effective route to stopping this would be to bring up the states' rights issue, rather than the emotional issue.
Also, there's supposed to be a separation of church and state in this country, so no president should force his own personal beliefs on the country via a constitutional ammendment!
and, as an addendum, I think the only way to enforce one-man-one-woman marriages is to have participants take a genetic test prior to a wedding. And if they dare try to annul any marriages that have already taken place, they will have to force EVERY CURRENTLY MARRIED COUPLE in the USA to take genetic tests, just to make sure that they are indeed male-female couples. It's the only fair way to prove once and for all that noone cross-dresses just to get around this stupid "law". A strip-down to view body parts is not conclusive, since people can have their twiddly bits surgically manipulated to look like they are the other sex. Thus, I doubt that sex-reassignment surgery will convince anyone who is on Bush's side that they have indeed changed sex, wrt this marriage issue.
No, I'm not kidding. I'm totally serious about this.

Dubya would probably like genetic tests. He'd probably also like to rewrite the Constitution to make himself absolute ruler.
