Fuel for thought

I read this in surrdave's LJ this morning:

When you don't have the fuel for your inner drive, you can't pursue dreams, and when you don't pursue them, you lose them.

This hit a chord with me.

I've never understood how so many of my college friends gave up their dreams. We all had them years ago, but nearly all of them gave theirs up.

I, OTOH, have been doing what I can to live mine. Lately, though, due to economics I'm spending more energy trying to survive and less on the pursuit of happiness. This, in turn, has really been dragging me down.

This was the first year where I didn't make any real resolutions because things were that bad. I don't know how to get out of this rut (suggestions welcome), but I've got to.

I've really gotten a lot out of doing yoga. I don't know as much as I'd like to about it, but it really does help with breath, focus, and coping with stress. And groovy as this sounds, it might calm things down enough for you to find that quiet inner voice that would help you to find ways around some of the obstacles you're facing so you can get back realizing your goals.

Or if not yoga, pick some other physical activity that you really enjoy doing.

I haven't yet found a physical activity I like doing that works with my erratic schedule, so I'm just doing whatever I can stand.

Yoga is sounding more and more interesting. My health club has two classes that involve it today -- one at noon, and one at 4:30pm. If Warren doesn't have my car tied up (he's threatening to do so as I type this) and if I remember, I think I'll try one out.

the big thing that hits a lot of people is kids... kids are a big drain on your time and money. Once they're born they become the #1 priority and unless you can tie your dream(s) somehow to the welfare of your kids (e.g. one of my dreams is to finish college...would mean better job, more money, better life for my (as yet unborn) kids) then the dream gets deferred until they're grown and out of the house, a process that takes ever longer these days. If you're lucky the kids are standing on their own two feet while you're still in good health and you can finally do that 'round the world trip, or write that novel, or whatever.

Kids aren't in the picture right now for various reasons, the biggest of which I'll go into in another post.
