Someone pointed this out to me: One of the Beatles' 1965 concert riders
has been posted on the web. Interesting reading if you want to see how
they wanted to be treated. The most interesting item may be item 5 on this page:

5. Artists will not be requried to perform before a segregated audience.

I always liked the Beatles. Now we know they were a class act even back in the mid-60s.

God damn. That is so fucking awesome. I loved them when I was a little kid and cried like the widow when Lennon died. They truly were giants.

I've heard several stories from reporters and whatnot that were assigned to cover the Beatles, and who said very similar things. That they'd actually show an interest in social conversation with the press people, asking them questions about what they liked and their family or whatever.

They were so much a class act that two popes in a row named themselves John Paul. The next pope is expected to carry on the tradition and call himslf George Ringo.

Actually the new pope is Benedict. Maybe he likes Benedictine.

It's cute how they also request four cots. It makes me think of little hobbits all sleeping in a row.

I have Larry Kane's book Ticket to Ride, about being the only American journalist to have full press credentials for the 1964 and 1965 Beatles US tours. This clause matches what he described about them, with one strange exception.

Apparently, they were not aware that a certain term for Jews was considered particularly offensive on this side of the pond. Kane overheard one of them use the word and objected. The Beatles went to him later to apologize.
