Try M-audio

Locally available at Central Computers, Guitar Center, and possibly Guitar Showcase.

M-Audio has good stuff, but it's all much more expensive. I haven't seen anything comparable in price to the GarageKey for a MIDI controller. What is not completely clear to me is whether it works only as USB-MIDI, or whether it also supports standard MIDI. That is, could it be used as a controller for a standard MIDI sound module, without a computer's involvement?

The M-Audio Keystation 49 costs only $10 more (list price -- street price will often be less) and has an additional octave plus pitch bend and modulation wheels.

Admittedly, the other keyboards cost more, but you get more. I'm attracted to the Oxygen-8 ($180), myself, but I'm a sucker for knobs. And the Pro-88 is definitely on my wish list.

Whoops, you're right--I'd missed that one.

Hm...might be worth picking up as a portable emergency keyboard, esp. if it can fit in a suitcase...

Also note the Ozone and Ozonic -- significantly more expensive but they also include high-quality A/D and D/A interfaces. Basically a complete field recording or performance setup.

Those look neat. But there are no nuance controls, like a pitch-bend wheel or ribbon (unless you gotta press down on the key hard to bend the pitch). Or are those done on the Mac itself?

As for me, I'd prefer one of these babies. But then, I just can't afford it right now. (Note that there is a Voyager Editor Librarian available that runs under OS X!)
