I love my colleagues. Today one of them commented on a recent radio station format change where a long-time heavy metal station went Mexican. The way Dan told the story was roughly like this:

"I was driving in, and I was feeling kind of sleepy, so I figured I'd tune in KSJO and get a hit of Metallica. Instead, I hear this 'dum, ya-da-da-da-da, ya-da-da-da-da' music, and I think, 'It must be Carlos Santana,' but it doesn't sound like 'Oye Como Va' or 'Black Magic Woman,' and it's got too many accordions in it."

I am so pissed at the death of KSJO. The last good hard-rock station in the South Bay has bit the dust.

Screw you ClearChannel.

So, what's your issue with The Bone?

Putting my John Higdon (from ba.broadcast) hat on, THE BONE IS NOT A SAN JOSE STATION!

:)

Seriously, I think the Bone is OK. As far as how the trend of radio consolidation has played out in the south SF bay area over the past ten or so years, there's been so many format changes, simulcasts, etc. that nothing really surprises me any more. There's nothing that can be done about this, practically speaking, because people who have a vested interest in seeing a particular type of station succeed don't have the money, or desire to invest in such a station; those that do must meet the bottom line; and the laws that once prevented multiple ownership of broadcast properties in the same band are no longer in effect.

But, but, but, I LOVE mariachi music. When the Mexican family lived across the street, they'd have big family parties where they blasted the Mariachi station on the radio of one of the trucks and the little kids would play with the pinata. Fond memories.

If it were not for the Mexican stations, I would not have survived all those late night drives down I-5. It was either mariachi or those scolding stations that would alternately offer smiting and love from Jaysus.

I didn't say there was anything wrong with mariachi music.

I just got a kick out of the way this guy expecting to hear Metallica reacted and parsed things when he instead was presented with mariachi music.

I do wish the Mexican stations would replace the Jaysus stations instead of standard English-language music stations, though.

KSJO? The home of "industrial-strength rock & roll"? Gone? Damn.

The description of the music sounds a lot like Los Lobos.

From the description, it was mariachi music and nothing like Los Lobos.
