Soon I'll hopefully do a catch-up of the past week. I've been ill, and my system or browser has crashed every time I've tried to enter something.
Anyhow, here goes something lightweight....
The idea is to pick your personal soundtrack for various events and moods.
My head-over-heels in love song is... "Believe it or Not - Theme from 'The Greatest American Hero'" by Joey Scarbury
"Believe it or not I'm walking on air/I never thought I could feel so free...." The song lasted longer than the TV show; it's really upbeat without being excessively cloying.
My breakup song is... "Hurts So Bad" by Little Anthony and the Imperials
"I know you don't know what I'm going through...." I do.
My broken heart song is... "Everything I Own" by Bread
David Gates wrote the song about his father's death. To me it captures that feeling better than any song out there.
My s/he's a bastard song is... "Put Another Log On The Fire" by Shel Silverstein
"Put another log on the fire, then please explain why you are leaving me." The protagonist reminds me of my ex-husband.
My go to hell song is... "We're Not Gonna Take It" by Twisted Sister
A close second is "School's Out For Summer" by Alice Cooper. It has the same spirit.
My standing strong song is... "Don't Cry Out Loud" by Peter Allen
I always think of him singing it while fight AIDS.
My recovered song is... "I'm Still Standing" by Elton John
It really is about his recovery from drug abuse. Oddly enough, he was snockered when he was making the video and was "barely standing" at that time.
My getting on with life song is... "Downtown" by Petula Clark
The song is calm in tone, yet talks about going to do something exciting.
My relapse song is... "Here You Go Again" By Dolly Parton
I had a hard time coming up with anything for this category because I don't really have anything to relapse from.
My fond memories song is... "Shticks and Stones" by Allan Sherman
I have two separate memories associated with this. When I was in 10th grade someone left a copy of the album "My Son, the Folk Singer" on the record player in the school's student lounge. A bunch of us put it on and listened to it. I started finding my mouth moving along with all the words even though, as far as I knew, I'd never heard the album before. Even my classmates started flipping out as they watched. The stuff on that album was somehow ingrained into my psyche.
Ten months later my family was moving. As we packed up the toyroom, I found about eight albums under the record player. I didn't even know we had albums other than mine. These were Dad's from when we lived with his parents. One of the records was -- you guessed it -- "My Son, the Folk Singer." I have a photo of me at the age of three standing over the phonograph console watching that record spin.
My one-night stand song is... "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" by Carole King
I won the KARA/KLIV/KRTY Holiday Party Karaoke Contest doing it. (It was also the last time they held a karaoke contest at the party, but that's another story altogether.)
My best friend song is... "Cocktails for Two" by Spike Jones
Why Spike Jones? My best friend from childhood introduced me to him. One day I came over and she and her siblings were playing this album they'd come across. "You've got to hear this -- it's great!" Katie exclaimed. She was right. We spent that evening running around and dancing to "Spike Jones Murders the Classics."
My all friends song is... "The Name Game" by Shirley Ellis
It's a song! It's a game! It's both! Everyone of course wants to run "Chuck" through it.
My disowned family song is... "Everyday People" by Sly and the Family Stone
The song talks about people of one minority who won't accept someone of a different minority. So much like the members of my family I prefer not to associate with (not to be confused with the other members, who are all way cool).
My get drunk song is... "I Feel Good (I've Got You)" by James Brown
My friend Edjik and I got blasted at a gourmet show one year. After the show we wound up coming away with two carfuls of photo-perfect produce and other goodies. We went to our friend Brette's condo complex to share the wealth, but he wasn't in, so we wound up running around the complex belting that song at the top of our lungs till we got tired of waiting for him to show up.
My dance your ass off song is... "Hava Nagila"
When you've got my looks and my ability to attract guys who like to dance (Warren is the only boyfriend I've ever had who did and really could), this is about the only number you do get to dance to.
My sing your heart out song is... "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park" by Tom Lehrer
When I first got on my own I had a housewarming. Someone found my Tom Lehrer record, put it on, and the whole room was singing along. I've been to several other parties where this happened.
My proud of my country song is... "America the Beautiful"
I have yet to see purple mountains, but I've seen some of those amber waves of grain.
My ashamed of my country song is... "Ohio" by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young
The National Guard was totally out of control. It's been 30 years, yet whenever I hear "Kent State" I think of those four students who just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.
My claw my own ears out song is... "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" by Cyndi Lauper
Actually, just about anything she sings makes me want to claw my ears out. That lady has a voice that hits me like nails-on-a-blackboard.
My good tune, bad lyrics song is... "Morning Train" by Sheena Easton
Right at the peak of the feminist movement that song came out. Eee-YUCK. The protagonist in that song had no life of her own.
My 'you know it's the holidays' song is... "Do You Hear What I Hear" by Bing Crosby
You'll sometimes hear "White Christmas" other times of the year, but that one only seems to appear then.
My relaxing after work song is... "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh" by Allan Sherman
I can't help but smile and kick back whenever I hear that song.
My spring cleaning song is... the entire "In a Metal Mood" album by Pat Boone
A collection of hard rock classics done big band-style, it's so bad it's good. It gets me through drudgery.
My summer in the sun song is... "Question" by the Moody Blues
For some reason that seemed to be the song on the radio whenever I was at Nanny's swim club.
My working on what I love song is... "I Only Want To Be With You" by Dusty Springfield
That song has the sentiment.
My working for my supper song is... "Five O'Clock World" by the Troggs
During one of my first board-op shifts at the radio station in the summer of 1990 I got an odd request. It was from a guy who had just been sacked from IBM after over 20 years there. His wife had terminal cancer, and he was fired for taking time off to be with her as she went through chemotherapy even though he'd gotten it approved in advance. I knew IBM at the time was doing anything to get rid of folks, and this guy sounded believeable (we get lots of weirdoes calling, but this caller seemed sincere). Two of us poured through the non-alphabetically-stacked tape cartridges to find the one with "Five O'Clock World" for this guy, and I found a hole in the programming to slip it into. When I finally heard the song I understood why he requested it.
My visualize world peace song is... "If We Only Had Love" by Jacques Brel and Leslie Bricusse
I haven't heard the song in years, nor have I ever heard a recording of it (we learned it in Hebrew school, of all places!), but it always seemed extra sincere to me
My falling asleep song is... "Gabriel" from "A Day at the Races"
When I put that movie on to fall asleep to, that's the song during which I can guarantee I konk out.

That song grates, but "Time After Time" one of my all-time favorites.
