Since my wallet was stolen at the TSA checkpoint, I've been using my late Uncle Pete's wallet. Mom asked me if I wanted it the last time I was in NJ, and I said, "Sure."

She asked, "Are you actually going to use it?"

I said, "Probably." Well, I'm using it now. It's in mint condition, real leather, very nice, and the only thing that was in it was a card-calendar from 1978, the year he died. I left that calendar in the wallet to remind me of him, as he was one of my favorite uncles.

Unfortunately, Uncle Pete's wallet has no change pouch. I tried putting the change in a crevice in one part of it, but the change kept falling out. Right now the change is rustling about in my pants pocket, and I really don't like that. The guys I eat dinner with on Fridays didn't understand what was so abnormal to me about having loose change in my pocket, as they're all used to that and have always made fun of my "pregnant" wallets over the years.

I figure I'll keep using Uncle Pete's wallet for a while, but eventually I want to get one with a change pouch. Since I like carrying my wallet in my pants pocket, I may try to get a men's wallet in the UK that has a change pouch. I have seen some with change pouches in California; I suspect it's because of the large number of immigrants from Asia and India here.

Let me recommend one of the roughly semicircular change purses. Very convenient.

The huge advantage of a separate change purse is that you can put it in your carry-on bag at the airport while keeping your wallet in your pocket. With no metal in it, a changeless wallet won't set off the detector.

I actually prefer my separate coin purse to the attached-to-wallet one I had earlier. I'd recommend a nice leather one with a mouth that flexes open and snaps shut, if you can find such a beast.

I agree with [livejournal.com profile] mdlbear and [livejournal.com profile] hitchhiker, separate coin purses are good. My semi-circular one has euros in it, and my "flexmouth" has UK currency in it.

However if you want a moderately cheap wallet with coin purse, I noticed the local german supermarket has one with a detachable coin purse and detachable card holder on sale this week (though there are plenty of places that sell wallets with permanent coin sections). I can pick one up for you for February if you'd like ... black?

I don't keep coins in my wallet ever since I noticed that if I keep a wallet in my left back pocket, I get terrible pains in my left hip, and that having more than a medium thickness wallet in my right hand pocket means I end up putting too much weight on my left buttock and again hip and back problems. It's currently at maximum healthy thickness so some receipts and business cards are coming out tonight!

Hmmm...what colors does it come in? My "default" wallet color is burgundy, with navy my second choice.
