Question for y'all

I'm asking this because it came up in dinner conversation the other day.

When you use a wallet, where do you put your coins:
  1. In the change compartment of your wallet
  2. In your pocket
  3. In a separate change pouch or purse
  4. Somewhere else
  5. Change? Who carries change?

[identity profile] tibicina.livejournal.com 2004-01-20 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
In the change compartment unless there isn't one or it's not big enough. Then I'll use a separate change pouch or purse.

[identity profile] bikergeek.livejournal.com 2004-01-20 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
B. Mens' wallets in the US don't customarily come with change compartments, and anything with one is viewed as "feminine" and therefore deprecated. Rather impractical. I understand things are different in Europe, which is why larger-denomination coins have gained greater acceptance outside the US.

[identity profile] dglenn.livejournal.com 2004-01-20 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Normally: separate coin purse
In garb: belt pouch
If I'm doing "boy" more thoroughly than usual (not carrying my purse, probably wearing coat and tie): pocket

[identity profile] hellloooonurse.livejournal.com 2004-01-20 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
pants' pocket.

[identity profile] grey-lady.livejournal.com 2004-01-20 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Presuming there is one available, in my pocket.

This is why I dislike the insistence in some women's clothing to eliminate pockets.

Seeing your portrait/avatar, I expected you to say your cheeks....

Oh, that's not actually you?

(pocket for me.)

[identity profile] figmo.livejournal.com 2004-01-20 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
Down, boy! If you saw the dog with me at GAFilk, that was her the day I got her as a puppy.

[identity profile] peteralway.livejournal.com 2004-01-20 10:48 am (UTC)(link)
My cheeky comment was referring to Grey Lady's chipmunk picture! I wasn't at GaFilk, unfortunately. I assume your dog didn't really grow up from a chipmunk!

A-D inclusive, depending on various external factors.

Mostly A, sometimes B

Change

[identity profile] smoooom.livejournal.com 2004-01-20 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
All of the above except e. It really depends on too many things. Especially with Toonies floating around. Though it can be a nice suprise to go through all the various areas change can acrue and find four or five of the things plus two or three loonies.

I do carry a wallet around, with plenty of space for change. But I can never be asked to open it and put the change in, so my change mormally lives a life of its own somewhere in the unexplored depths of various bags...

[identity profile] tnatj.livejournal.com 2004-01-20 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
B. In me pocketses, my preciousss. In me pocketses. They're they are, the shiny things, they sits among the lint and the munched up receiptsss from Wal.Mart, they do. Yesss, they do.

[identity profile] hitchhiker.livejournal.com 2004-01-20 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
I had a wallet with a change pouch in front for a long while. Then it fell to pieces, and I took to keeping change in my pocket. Then I got a keychain with a coinpouch attached, which is what I currently use.

[identity profile] redaxe.livejournal.com 2004-01-20 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
Typically in the pants pocket. Along with the keys, so that if I have accumulated sufficient change, I can be heard coming for blocks and blocks. (No, I haven't -- yet -- been mistaken for the Good Humor truck, but then, I don't typically wear all white, either. [And when I did the last time, I was mistaken for a blancmange, instead :-] )

This is assuming you mean everyday wear. In garb, it goes in the belt pouch along with everything else.

[identity profile] filkerdave.livejournal.com 2004-01-20 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly, in my pocketses, since men's wallets in the US don't have a space for change. I keep meaning to get a wallet when I'm in the UK that DOES have a space for change.

[identity profile] keristor.livejournal.com 2004-01-20 08:45 am (UTC)(link)
Where do you find one in the UK which has space for change? I went round every men's clothing store in my town before GaFilk looking at wallets (I wanteed a flat one rather than folded) and I wouldn't have been able to get more than a couple of coins in any of them (and wouldn't be at all convenient).

B, in my case. And I put some notes in my pocket as well (up to about 20 or 30 pounds' worth).

[identity profile] figmo.livejournal.com 2004-01-20 10:21 am (UTC)(link)
OOoooo....

I may want to hold off on getting a new wallet till I'm in the UK, then. I may even want to pick one up for Warren.

Coin purse, mostly. If I'm rushed at the counter, I'll put change in my pocket and transfer it to the coin purse later.

[identity profile] scottscidmore.livejournal.com 2004-01-20 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
B: in a pants pocket; I don't carry a wallet, all my ID/plastic resides in a shirt pocket.

[identity profile] figmo.livejournal.com 2004-01-20 10:27 am (UTC)(link)
I used to do something similar (cards in pants pocket), but when my driver's license got so bent up and mutilated I had to get a new one, I started using a wallet.

[identity profile] chatworthy.livejournal.com 2004-01-20 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
In pants pocket.
In Ren Fair garb, I usually have a belt pouch just for money.

Separate change purse, which I carry in a pocket. The trend in women's clothing to eschew pockets annoys me; fortunately, my work place is casual and I don't go to many dress-up occasions -- except shul on Shabbat, but then I'm not carrying money anyway so it doesn't matter. I have never been comfortable carrying a purse -- or rather, putting anything I'd mind losing in a purse.

[identity profile] mrlogic.livejournal.com 2004-01-20 08:59 am (UTC)(link)
Pants pocket. Usually way too much of it, too.

Probably a fairly typical man in this respect, I believe. (Locationwise, at least.) Most likely you were thinking more in terms of women's responses.

[identity profile] figmo.livejournal.com 2004-01-20 10:30 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I wanted to see both genders in the responses, and am delighted I have.

If you look through the batch, you'll notice the women tend to respond similarly to the men in this sampling. The women who have responded seem to be like-minded to me when it comes to where to put a wallet (esp. the lack of desire to carry a purse).

[identity profile] lothie.livejournal.com 2004-01-20 09:30 am (UTC)(link)
A usually, but consistency, eh.

[identity profile] lysana.livejournal.com 2004-01-20 10:24 am (UTC)(link)
Separate coin purse unless I'm using a particular shoulder bag that is mostly a wallet on steroids. It has a built-in coin compartment.

[identity profile] nolly.livejournal.com 2004-01-20 10:31 am (UTC)(link)
I don't use a wallet per se. My various cards -- ID, (in)frequent buyer cards, plastic, etc. -- live in an outer pocket of my PDA case. Generally, I take only the one or two I'll needs in with me -- my debit card, ID, and Frequent Swimmer card if I'm grabbing lunch at Fins, for instance. Cash, both bills and change, lives in a coin purse in my pocket. If I have no pockets, I'll carry some kind of purse, but they tend to annoy me and get in my way, so I'm always on the lookout for dressy clothes with pockets, since dressy occasions are when it's likely an issue.

in my pocket

[identity profile] catsittingstill.livejournal.com 2004-01-20 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Pockets. I think clothes without pockets are part of a conspiracy to deprive women of economic equality on the most basic level and I flat out won't buy them.

I don't wear garb much anymore--but when I did I used a belt pouch

[identity profile] gailg.livejournal.com 2004-01-20 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely A.

By the way, Hi Lynn! I've been "lurking" for about a week but finally decided to comment.

Hello and welcome to LJ!

I've been on LJ since July. But I've only known that you were for about a week. I'm not surprised though. Seems like anyone who's anyone is here. :)

C. Several years ago, I picked up a nice leather change purse at an American Tourister/Buxton outlet store. Squeeze it and it opens, like a 10-petaled flower. It's served me well, unless it's overflowing with change. I hate loose change rattling around in my pocket.

I used to use plastic ones, like the ones availabile at trade shows, but they'd wear out after about a year. Some of them had the slogan, "Avoid handtraps". What the @#$% is a handtrap, anyway? Is it when my fingers get caught by the "jaws" of the coin purse? Is it when I'm caught with my hand in my pocket?

Speaking of wallets.....any news on your old one?

[identity profile] figmo.livejournal.com 2004-01-20 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
No news. (No surprise. :-( )
