The House of Representatives, this week, endorsed religion. Not my religion, and likely not yours, but religion.

The text of H RES 153 is:

Recognizing the public need for fasting and prayer in order to secure the blessings and protection of Providence for the people of the United States and our Armed Forces during the conflict in Iraq and under the threat of terrorism at home

Here's the link to find out how your Congressional representative voted.

Alas, mine, Anna Eshoo, voted for it. I'm disgusted. Clearly she checked her brains at the door that day.

I also fail to see how fasting (and endangering my health) and praying is going to help either our troops or the capital of Rhode Island.

Email or phone her? I phoned Pete Stark, my rep, to thank him for his No vote.

Unfortunately looking "ungodly" to your constituents is generally considered to be a particularly ugly form of political suicide. Some legislators will stand up and fight religious based legislation that has clear negative consequences, such as a law with penalties built into it, but most of 'em wont. THere's also an alarming tendnency these days to "pass laws first and let SCOTUS throw 'em out later."

I immediately flung out an outraged e-mail.

Her web site is "http://www-eshoo.house.gov/ (http://www-eshoo.house.gov/)". There's a form for feedback.

I've noticed. Eshoo is notorious for being one of those. We've even done interviews at the radio station where she has said that's what she did.

As I'vesaid elsewhere, I think that we should honor it by calling it "Ramadan Day."

Annoying Congress! Separation of Providence and State, I say!
