For future reference, if you need Windows-style help but platform-independence, look for a tool called JavaHelp. It's also HTML-based (XML, actually), fairly cheap (I think around $100/seat, but it's been a couple years), and not that hard to learn. They provide some sort of GUI for developing stuff if you want to, but I had no problem punting that and working in Emacs.
I only used this tool for one assignment at one company, and details have fuzzed over since then, but I just thought I'd throw this out there in case it helps you in the future.
