You Will Be Assimilated!
Jan. 16th, 2002 06:02 pmI went for OWA (Outlook Web Access) training at work today. My reaction to the software in one sentence: "What a piece of crap!"
I don't know what management was thinking when they went to switch us to this. Actually, I take that back; I got the "official party line" during this session. Seems their Help Desk folks got tired of supporting multiple clients (that worked). By having one client (that doesn't quite work right), you only have to have help desk employees who know how to use that one client instead of competent help desk employees. It's absurd switching a company of mostly UNIX users to a PC-based system, especially one that doesn't really work with anything other than PCs.
I don't have a PC; neither does about half my group. We use a program for our scheduled meetings called "MeetingMaker" that works. In the session we learned LookOut does not quite work. One of the other people in my group went to today's earlier session; she walked out of it with the same level of disgust.
I nailed another deadline today -- I think. I was told I'd nailed it, then at the last minute something came through that someone wanted documented, but it wasn't clear whether it was me or the other "Lynn" in the group who was to document it. I only know I had done what I was told and that my boss said what I'd turned in was okay.
It could also be this stuff was for the previous release notes, which were done by someone else, in which case it's not my fault. Sigh...I want to get things right on the job.
Last night I spoke with a bichon frise breeder located in Reno, NV. She has one female in her current litter but is keeping her. She was really cool about not pushing the males on me (it seems like everyone is trying to push me to get a male dog when I do not want to deal with 6" high urine stains and all that marking!). I told her while I really want a new puppy, I'm willing to wait for The Right Dog. She was impressed Fuzzball had lived to 15.5 years; she said it was the 2nd oldest she'd ever heard a bichon frise live to, the oldest being her vet's 17-year-old. This, I presume, scored well for me. I don't mind driving five hours for The Right Dog. I don't see a dog as "just a pet," but as "an adopted member of the family." I see myself as setting up to invest another 15.5 years or more, so I want to be sure I adopt The Right Dog.
Fuzzball was The Right Dog. The first time we met she just relaxed and snuggled up to me. Puppies, especially itty-bitty nine-week-old ones, don't usually just lie down next to someone and go into "armrest mode" right away. I was very lucky, as we were going to be paired off whether we liked it or not.
I watched the bichons show at the San Mateo Dog Show last Saturday. Only four were entered, and of those only two actually showed up (one had a scratched cornea; I don't know what happened to the other). Both were very young but had very strong and very pleasant personalities. I could tell the male from the female because he was much bigger. He showed better than she did, but they were both adorable.
I got my PowerBook back from the shop. The folks at 1-800-WE-FIX-MACS felt the problem was my hard drive, so instead of just sending it in to be replaced, I had the six gigabyte drive replaced with a 30 gigabyte drive. Hey, if you're gonna replace the stupid drive, why not upgrade? I can't wait to get home and try it out. Actually, I'll wait till I eat dinner and then try it out. Right now I am still getting over my cold and just want to eat and sleep.
I also lost another half pound this past week. It's nothing to write home about, but I should be glad considering I usually gain weight this time of month.
I need to find the remote control to my satellite dish and my Apex DVD player -- yes, the one with the "secret" menu that lets you override Macrovision. I have an idea as to where it might be, but it'll take major ferreting to find it. At least I can now use my satellite in the den again!
On a totally different front, I just saw this article that shows
