Frustrated with the medical community

Yesterday I tried to make an appointment with my doctor, but she was totally booked and couldn't fit me in. The nurse at the phone insisted I needed to go to the emergency room and not wait till the next day for an appointment.

After a few hours of working, notifying work, and getting cleaned up, I had Warren drive me in Just In Case I wouldn't be able to drive home (this turned out to be a very smart idea). I arrived at El Camino Hospital and was checked in at 3:34pm. I wasn't taken to the "fast track" area till over an hour later.

Once put in a "seat" (hospital bed set up to look like a recliner - rather uncomfortable), the lab tech drew blood, a nurse gave me a "grasshopper" consisting of lidocaine, mylanta, and belladonna and then asked for a urine sample. Even after the "drink" I still had burning in my stomach. I was starving, but they wouldn't let me eat anything. When they brought a pill, they gave me barely enough water to get it in. The "highlight" of my time in ER was when I allowed a student nurse to do her first-ever IV insertion into my left arm. That was the only "entertainment" I had.

After the IV was inserted I was injected with some kind of narcotic pain killer and an anti-nausea drug for the nausea the pain killer was expected to cause. The two made me very woozy and drowsy, but the burning and pain didn't go away. A few hours later they gave me a Pepcid and some more painkiller. The pain and most of the burning finally went away. They also did two more blood draws to determine I didn't have a heart attack.

I was finally released at 1am. When I went to stand up I had to lie back down because I got very dizzy. An EMT came by and took my blood pressure lying down, sitting, and standing. We both noticed the top number dropped by at least ten points going from lying to sitting and from sitting to standing. He went off, and I was told my ride was here, so I left, prescriptions in tow. We then went to the 24-hour Walgreen's in town to get them filled, then to Carrow's so I could finally have some food (I hadn't eaten all day!!!). In the middle of eating I had to get up and run to the bathroom because I started projectile vomiting. Being the anal-retentive person I am, I managed to hold it till I got to the bathroom, then aimed it directly into the toilet. Still, it was gross. I managed to hold down the rest of the meal, but I haven't eaten today because I'm afraid I'd puke it up.

The worst part? My doctor has no openings till the 11th, my gastroenterologist is out of town till the 16th, I still don't have a diagnosis, and I actually feel worse today than I did yesterday.

Oh, you poor dear!!!

Thanks. Sad that I felt the need to make it today. My friends are having a hell of a time lately. :-(

Wish I could help. Try to take good care of yourself.

Yeowch! What is this about hospitals about not feeding people? When I nearly passed OUT from what turned out to be low blood sugar and was brought into the hospital for tests and things it took them forever to figure out that if they FED me I would get better. Which as it happens I did.

Hope you get better soon.

for real! on about my 3rd hospital stay, i had a nurse friend visit me, and she knew they don't feed you, so she brought me yummy yummy food, even snuck me a candy bar in once. couldn't be any woprse for me than those germs they come through spreading around witha mop.

The ElectroCide System, from Electrolyzer Corp., Boston, Mass., is a multi-purpose, antimicrobial system that could have a significant impact on the food industry’s approach to public health. “The technology converts tap water into a disinfectant 80 percent more powerful than chlorine bleach, but safe enough to drink or spray in your eyes,” explains Patrick Lucci, vice president of marketing for Electrolyzer. “The electrolyzed water can be sprayed on meats and vegetables to sanitize them before use or storage as the water kills both human and plant pathogens.”

(It's also in use in hotels with the negatively and positively charged ionized waters produced, used as non-toxic cleaning and sanitizing solutions--there was an article in the Boston Globe yesterday or the day before in the business section. )

There is some sort of stomach bug going around. One of the Ladies who works for my mother had it. After she got the bad pains and throwing up, she was sick for about 2 days.
As retched as it sounds, may you have what she had, so you can start getting better in a day or two.
And no, I couldn't have con plagued it to you, I haven't gotten it. Got a rotten cold, but no stomach problems.

oh girlie i feel your pain. i've been through this routine a number of times and it never gets any better, or more tolerable. our health "care" system is really messed up. when you're ready for a laugh, swing by www.thesingingpatient.com and listen to the MPs, esp. "(happy to be) stuck by you" (about having students nurses trash my arms!) and "patient 2946065" (about being treated like a number/ piece of meat in the hospital.
i hope the meds help you through "til the doc finally lets you in. did they put you on a waiitng list in case someone cancels?

Alas, only in my wildest dreams. :-(

I'm still waiting for the doctor to say I can come in.

Close; Lady is a Bichon Frise. The photo is from the day I got her; it's the first time I ever picked her up.

Fer ghu sake, girl, call your doctor and start sitting on their doorstep until you get results. (This from someone who has two hairline fractures on her knees).

I called my internist's office multiple times today and got no results. I tried to be nice to the woman on the phone, figuring nice people are more likely to get helped.

So very sorry about what you're going through -- hope the problem is investigated, identified, and fixed sooner rather than later! Sadly, I have often observed that people in the medical profession -- who are supposed to be all about "compassion" -- tend to use their patients' emotional state in their triage considerations: "Well, they still sound cheerful and friendly enough, so it can't be *that* bad. We can put off seeing them for another few days." It is all too frequently the case, in my experience, that you have to get *nasty* with these people to get them to give you *basic care*. Sigh.

You're quite likely right - when I brought my daughter, then 4 or so, crying from an awful earache, into the emergency room, we were admitted to a room, then ignored. After something like an hour or so I finally lost patience, went out, and tracked down a doctor myself. THIS worked.

On the nice/nasty issue, I've sometimes gotten results by being nice, but persistant enough to be mildly annoying. "I'm sure you don't mean to neglect me, but ...."

[identity profile] catalana.livejournal.com 2008-06-04 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh - that really sucks. I'd been wondering what was up with you lately (I haven't been on LJ a whole lot, so I might have just missed your posts, but it seemed like forever since I'd read anything from you.) But this was not the kind of update I wanted you to have! *hug* Good luck getting better - I'll be sending good thoughts your way.

I've also been busy with work and with healing from the luggage cart incident. When I'm low on energy I tend to concentrate it on things that bring money into the house.

I can't blame you there!

I hope you're through the worst of this, it sounds really icky.

9 1/2 hours in the hospital and you don't even have a diagnosis.

Hope you can:

1. See a doctor.
2. Get a diagnosis.
3. Get well soon!!!

[hugs!] Hope you feel better quickly - and find out what's wrong.
