Should I pay for this?

I'm tempted to put up some icons that would actually tell folks something, but I only have three.

I'm not sure whether I can justify paying for LJ just for putting up photos. Any opinions?

Well, it's pretty easy to load pictures; seems to me even those of us who are limited to three (like me) could manage to rotate 'em without too much annoyance.

I paid mostly to feel like I was supporting the community. The icons don't mean that much to me.

I wouldn't hesitate to support the community if I were more confident about replacing the income from the lost day job. Therein lies the rub.

Precisely. Maslow's hierarchy in budgeting (g) - food, water, shelter, clothing, phone, transportation, THEN things to improve the intellectual/social life. I probably wouldn't re-subscribe until I knew where my money was coming from, particularly since the journal itself would still be available.

My first paid membership was given to me as a gift, but I so liked having the 15 icons to choose from that it was pretty easy to decide to renew my membership once the first paid membership was up :).

Alas, I think more folks would pay for me not to write my journal at times, especially the way I was complaining so much over the last few months.

My concern is mostly whether I can justify the expense, given that it's neither a necessity (like food) nor is it something likely to lead towards more income.

If it's a data point, I rarely see icons because my primary access is text. But I wouldn't pay you to stop writing your LJ either...

1. Will it boost your mood, self-esteem, or anything else good & positive to exercise your creativity in creating some new icons? If so: Do it. creating them costs nothing. =:o}

2. Will it further boost your mood, self-esteem, or anything else good & positive to start using the icons in LJ? If so: How much is that worth to you?

Glad to hear you're having fun! =:o}

What categories would you create?

If you were to have multiple icons to mean different things, which ones would you use? What would they mean?

That is... when you say "...that would actually tell folks something" what would they tell us? Have you already come up with at least 4 different ideas?

And here's something you could do on a trial basis. Create a handful of icons, park them on a server somewhere, and start including them in your comments by using HTML img tags, like I do with my sample pictures when I announce new pages on Hazel's Picture Gallery. While you could probably code the HMTL img tags in your sleep, it would be even easier for you to have a plain text file somewhere from which you can cut and paste one line of HTML for the corresponding image.
