They had several where they don't specify original vs remake. For example, I've seen the "Rat Pack" version of Ocean's 11 but not the recent remake. Since they included the Ocean's 12 sequel to the recent remake on the list I kinda think they are referring to the recent Ocean's 11. Bedazzled is another one where I saw the original but not the remake. So I come in "around 40" depending on their intent.
If I were to guess, I'd say (a) that they are thinking of the recent versions unless they specify old and new, and (b) that this was originally started among high school students. The whole bit about "if you have seen more than X you need to get a life" seems very time related. Someone in their teens who has seen 70 of these movies is in a much different "need to get a life" category than someone in their 50s who has seen 70 of these movies. And if it was indeed started by the HS crowd, it's easier to see how they might not know about earlier versions even existing.
